HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO FRANK IFIELD

30th November is the birthday of the singer and guitarist, Frank Ifield OAM. He was born in Coventry and returned to the United Kingdom in November 1959 after living in Australia. He soon had four number-one hits on the UK Singles Chart with his cover versions of “I Remember You” (May 1962), “Lovesick Blues” (December), “The Wayward Wind” (March 1963) and “Confessin’ That I Love You” (September). Many of his hits including a distinctive yodelling style. In 1986 he contracted pneumonia, which resulted in removal of part of a lung and damage to his vocal cords. He relocated to Sydney in 1988 and was unable to sing or yodel for years as he recovered. “Wayward Wind”, made him the first UK-based artist to reach No. 1 three times in succession on the UK charts. The only previous artist to have done this was Elvis Presley.

Happy 90th Birthday Petula Clark

COMMENTS

Today is the 90th birthday of the singer, actress, and composer, Petula Clark. Her career began during the Second World War as a child entertainer on BBC Radio. In 1954 she charted with “The Little Shoemaker”, the first of her big UK hits and followed by others including ‘Sailor’. Within two years she began recording in French and went on to have hits in other languages. In 1964 her success extended to the United States with a four-year run of singles, many written or co-written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent. These include her signature song “Downtown”, “I Know a Place”, “My Love”, “A Sign of the Times”, “I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love”, “Who Am I”, “Colour My World”, “This Is My Song” (by Charles Chaplin), “Don’t Sleep in the Subway”, “The Other Man’s Grass Is Always Greener”, and “Kiss Me Goodbye”. In the United States she was sometimes called “the First Lady of the British Invasion”. She has sold more than 68 million records and enjoyed success in a number of movies including the musical film Finian’s Rainbow. She has also starred in West End and Broadway stage musicals including The Sound of Music, Blood Brothers, Sunset Boulevard and Mary Poppins.
